If $800 is too much for you, Verizon is ready to take some of the edge off of the Motorola Xoom pricing, provided you're willing to join its network.
The Xoom will be available through Verizon in just a couple of days on February 24 at a subsidized price of $599.99 with a two year contract. The carrier will also be offering the tablet at the regular unsubsidized price of $799.99 with no contract.
Data Plan Priced
Verizon will also be offering data plans for the Xoom, with monthly 3G wireless service starting at $20 a month for 1GB. Existing Verizon 3G plans range up to $80 a month for 10GB. Though Verizon also made note that Motorola's tablet will be upgradeable to 4G LTE service free of charge in the second quarter of 2011, there is no word yet on how the upgrade process will go or how much a 4G data plan will cost.
The Motorola Xoom will be the first tablet to run Google Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb, which is specially designed for tablets. Powered by a 1 GHz dual-core, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, the Xoom sports a 10.1-inch HD display and packs 32GB of storage (with an SD card expansion slot) and 1GB of DDR2 RAM. It also features a 2-megapixel, front-facing camera for video chats, as well as a rear-facing, 5-megapixel camera for photos and video capture in 720p HD.
Other features include Android Market access, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, 10-hour battery life during video playback, and a built-in gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer, and light sensor. Though the Xoom will not have Flash capability at launch, it will supposedly be available as a free download "soon," according to Verizon's press release.
